These people draw near to Me with their mouth,
And honor Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me. – Matthew 15:8
The Prophet Isaiah prophesied these words over 700 years before the birth of Jesus. We see Jesus saying the same thing in His days. This tells us the heart cry of God from the beginning concerning His people. God is not looking for men and women who are skilful in saying the right words to Him and about Him. Rather, He is after those whose hearts are just like His. He testified concerning David as a man after His own heart.
“And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.” – Acts 13:22
Just like David, God is still in search among His own people for men like the son of Jesse. But why will God be looking for people after His own heart one may ask? The answer can be found in the above scripture. It has to do with His will. The will of God is in His heart and if any man truly has God’s own kind of heart, that man will not only do His will but all of it.
“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him…” – 2 Chronicles 16:9.
It’s interesting to know that God was not talking to the Gentiles nor the unbelievers here, but His own people. This tells you that even Christians can have a heart that is not after the will of God. A man with a heart for God will love what God loves and hate what God hates. With such men, there are no grey areas. They are consistent.
Do you have a heart for God?
Proverbs 23:26 says “My son, give me your heart, And let your eyes observe my ways”. Give your heart to God today and ask Him to mould your heart after His own heart. God bless you.
