Do More Than Is Expected

“And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.” – Matthew 5:41

A few years ago, I had a job interview at a college and the requirements for the interview was for me to do a presentation on some of my past projects as it would be impossible to show the actual work. The night before the interview, I decided to spend about 4 hours to prepare some test data and build a demo project reflecting some of the work I had done with the test data.

On getting to the interview room, all the interviewers were expecting to see was my presentation and so when I shared my screen with them, they were blown away with the amount of thoughts and efforts I had put into the demo which was more than expected.

About 15 minutes after the interview, I received a call from my agent offering me the job immediately, the college said to my agent that even though they had not interviewed anyone else yet and most likely there is someone better than myself, they would rather employ me because of the fact that I did more than what was expected. At that point, I remembered the words of Jesus;

“And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.” – Matthew 5:41

I wonder how many opportunities we have missed in life because we decided to settle for the norm. There is a reward in doing more than is expected. No one rises above the level of the sacrifice they are willing to make.

God is a God that does more than is expected, after the first day of creation, God saw what He did, that it was good (Gen. 1:4) but He did not stop there, He did more on day 2 and saw that it was good (Gen. 1:10), day 3, day 4, day 5, day 6 until He got to the end of His creation He did more. He is the God who does exceedingly abundantly above all that we expect Him to do:

 “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” – Ephesians 3:20

I believe that we are called to do more than is expected, as dear children; we must imitate our heavenly Father. Do more than is expected of you today and watch God reward your efforts.

God bless you.
