Don’t Cry

When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said. - Luke 7:13 (NLT)

“Don’t Cry”, two words spoken by Jesus to a widow who had just lost her only son and was in a funeral procession out of the village to bury him. She was accompanied by a large crowd yet that did not bring her the comfort needed to bear the loss. Having good people around us is great but it is the presence of the Lord that makes the difference.

As she approached the gate of the village, the Lord of compassion met her on His way into the village. It was not a coincidence that Jesus was entering the village the same time this woman was leaving to bury the only man left in her life. The Lord knows how to comfort us.

Firstly, He comforts us with His presence at the right time and in the right place. He confirms that He is a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Even when we don’t see Him, His invisible attributes are clearly seen which gives us the assurance that He is always with us.

Secondly, He comforts us with His words. Words are powerful. Words are life.

Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV)
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit.

These two words; “Don’t Cry” were enough to give this woman hope for her loss. These were not just ordinary words but the words of the Creator moved by a heart of compassion towards a poor woman’s predicament. She probably was at the lowest point of her entire life and needed the right words to lift her up. The Lord knew her lowly state and was there to utter those life giving words to her.

You might be in a very dark or lonely place at the moment or you’re still trying to come to terms with the loss of a loved one. Jesus’ words to you today is “Don’t Cry”. Allow His words to comfort you and give you strength to carry on. His words are spirit and they are life.

John 6:63 (NKJV)
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

Have a great day. God bless you.
